Potential Schedule for Jewce FM:

I created this potential schedule for my radio station so my audience can see when the preferable time to tune in to suite there needs. The reason why there are no shows half way through Friday and all of Saturday is because a Jewish radio station will not have presenters working on 'shabbat' which is a religious  weekend where technology isn't used by observers therefore there will be no radio shows on those particular days. This is a decision I made because I have chosen to make my radio station Jewish themed.

Analysing Radio Stations Schedule:

This image is a screenshot of LBC'S Radio Scheule

This schedule states the different shows which will appear throughout the day on Monday. For example at 7 am Andrew Pierce will be presenting the Breakfast Show:

Typical conventions of a breakfast show is

-travel and weather updates
-the news

This is why I have chosen my radio extract to be part of Jewce FM's Breakfast Show.

Scripts of 3 Adverts:

Potential Products To Be Advertised:

The following is a list of potential products I think will be suitable to advertise on Jewce FM which fits the criteria of my local radio stations target audience.

1: Event Planner:

I think an event planner will be an applicable advert to use on my radio station the reason being is many people in the Jewish community have events such as Bar/Bat Mitzvah - weddings ect. The advert is suitable young adults ranging to middle aged adults as well as the older generation.

2: Kosher Supermarket

A Kosher supermarket advert's target audience is for young adults plus because required food requirements are popular in the community Jewce FM will be based on.

-Kosher Kingdom
-B Kosher
-Tapuach

3: Jewish/other Charities

A charity advert would interest a wide range of people male and female. Jewish people are more inclined to give charity to a Jewish organisation such as

-Chai Cancer
-Gift
-Anne Frank Trust UK

4: Car

Jewish people tend to have larger families therefore a car advert which advertises large family sized cars would target young adults who are expanding their families.

-Eli Motors
-Hendon Way Motors
-Ronnies Garage

5: Jewish Studies Extra Curriculum Tutor

A tutoring business's target audience would be teenagers and children who want to learn more about their religion.

Three Advert:

This advert's target audience is aimed for students travelling abroad as well as adults travelling abroad. The sound effects compliment the advert because it emphasises the use of a phone abroad which is taking pictures and sharing them through social media. The advert uses informal language "hash tag" which is aimed for a younger audience.

BT 8500 Home Phone Advert:

The BT 8500 home phone which blocks nuisance callers radio advert is aimed for an older target audience. The reason being is house phones are popular amongst older people. The main voice is an middle aged woman who states activities an older woman would do such as watch soaps. At the end of the advert a middle aged man speaks about the important information in a serious tone which is applicable to an older audience. The logo BT is stated many times throughout the radio advert in order for the brand name to penetrate the audiences mind.

Currys and PC World Advert:

Curry's and PC World advert is a service to install a washing machine as well as recycle the broken/unused machine. The advert is meant for parents and the older generation as well as young family starters. The tone of the advert is reassuring with some comedy aspects. The target audiences varies.

Car Giant Advert:

Car Giant advert's target audience is aimed for a young/middle aged audience. The different accents as well as aged actors emphasises the advert is specified for all different kinds of people wanting to buy a car. The radio advert is upbeat and has a happy tone. There is an upbeat music track in the background.

Race For Life Advert:

Race For Life's radio advert - Pretty Muddy race  is aimed for woman of all ages to participate in running to raise money and awareness of cancer. The actor throughout the advert was a young woman who included some jokey lines. The halo/ heaven/ superhero music is upbeat which matches the theme of the advert.

Radio Advert Research:

I will be listening to 5 radio adverts. The purpose of this task will to analyse who the intended audience for each advert is. As well as to look for the typical conventions of a radio advert for example:

•slogans
•brands
•terms and conditions
music and sound effects

and any other conventions I find.

Websites Similar to Jewce FM:

I will be analysing 2 Jewish radio stations  home pages which are similar to Jewce FM.

Something Jewish Radio

Something Jewish - radio station homepage has the same conventions as national mainstream radio stations like Capital FM and LBC. Although the advertisements are specifically aimed at Jewish people e.g Jewish dating websites. The radio station is local and the target audience are people living in London. The tabs on Something Jewish - website contain key features like the 'News,' 'Travel,' but the website also have more specified tabs like ' Dating' and 'Judaism.' The overall colour scheme is more serious and that together with the adult appropriate advertisements I think the radio station's target audience is meant for woman aged 18+ as well adapted for men to listen.

Capital FM:

Capital FM Websites Link

I used this website http://www.thisisglobal.com/ to get a better understanding of Capital FM's target audience. This is what I found.

Capital FM's stations website is more vibrant. The colour scheme is vibrant and buzzing as well the primary colour for the website is pink and red this could be to appeal to the female target audience. As Capital FM's audience's age range from 15-34 the website is easily accessible  to the wide age range as well the competitions and celebrity gossip are aimed at the age range. The tabs are aimed to appeal to woman (men) and younger people. The tabs are focused less on the news and important debates like LBC they are focused on 'Artists,' 'Photos,' 'Videos' 'Events' and 'Win.'

LBC Radio:

LBC Radio Website's Link

In order to get a better understanding of the target audience for LBC I used this website http://www.thisisglobal.com/ which helped me see the age and gender specifics.

The LBC radio station's website has more of a serious approach. The homepage is covered in news stories which would appeal to both genders. The words are formal. The tabs are created for adult use as there is little entertainment its mostly about the 'News,' 'Traffic & Travel' 'Election.' The only entertainment side of the website is the tabs 'Photos' and 'Win.' The pictures are to do with the news and serious matters. The presenter  Tom  Swarbrick is a middle aged man. The theme of the website is toned down and the advertisements is aimed at adults.

Websites:

Each radio station usually has a website. Each convention of the website is adapted to appeal to the target audience. By looking at several radio station's websites I have a rough idea of who the target audience are.

I will be looking at  local radio station's websites which are similar to my radio station and 2completely different national radio station websites.

When I look at the websites the key features I'll be looking at will be:
-font
-colour
-words used
-tabs
-stories shown
-competitions
-pictures
-songs being played
-preseneters

I will be looking at these specific website conventions to see how important the station applies itself to their target audience.

OFCOM:

I decided to use Ofcom's website in order to see different radio station's character of service sheets for Kiss, LBC and Capital FM. The reason I did this was to research the correct form of a character of service sheet so I can create one for my radio station Jewce FM.

The Ofcom character of service sheets contains important information such as the area, frequency and brief information of the radio stations target audience.

I have included some Ofcom character of service sheets for Kiss, LBC and Capital FM in this post.

Below is the character of service sheet for Jewce FM 93.3

Intended Target Audience:

I imagine the target audience for Jewce FM are young adults ranging to middle aged adults whilst remaining family orientated. The gender is not specified. The financial status is not specified.  My radio station is a local in the areas of Hendon, Golders Green and Edgware. I have decided to make a Jewish Radio Station. This makes the radio station more local than national. I have decided to make my radio station revolve around community. I looked at a website to research information regarding audience listening habits.

Thursday, 5 March 2015

My Radio Questionnaire:

I created this questionnaire in order to have a better understanding of the listening habits to help me create a radio show which is suitably adapted to a wide ranged audience.

Example of a Station Jingle - Capital FM:

Jingles:

I listened to a a variety of different stations and found there were a wide selection of different types of jingles on each radio station.  As part of my research I have included some jingles I've heard as well included a website which contain a variety of different jingles.

To listen to different jingles press here:

Station Jingle:

-Station jingles are played many times on the radio.
-It contains the station name/ frequency/ slogan.

Show Jingles:

-States the name of the station/show and sometimes the presenter(s). The tone of the jingle can be an indicator of the tone of the show.

News Jingle

-May include the name of the station as well as the word 'news.'
-The tone of the jingle as well as the music may be more serious/ dramatic giving a hint that the news is serious.

Specific Competition Jingles

-The music for this jingle may reflect what the competition will be for. E.g a competition for tickets at a concert may have the music of that specific band.
-The name of station will appear.
-The tone of the advert will usually be more upbeat as well as the presenters may be more enthusiastic whilst talking about the competition.

Traffic and Travel Jingles

-This is played mostly during the morning Breakfast Shows and the shows during rush hour.
- The jingle states the name of the station whilst adding the word 'travel' or 'traffic.'
-It may have music or sound effects but that will depend on what genre the statioin is.
-Often as part of the jingle a sponsor will be mentioned and there will be a slogan.

Sports Jingles

-State the name of the station as well as the word 'sport.'
-Presenter will be enthusiastic and the music/ sound effects will be upbeat reflection on the excitement for sport.
-May include sound effects of a stadium during a match e.g crowds cheering.
-May include a slogan.

Weather

-Will state the name of the station with the word 'weather.'
-It is usually sponsored by a company.
-The tone of the jingle is softer.
-The weather jingle may include sound effects sometimes of weather.
-The weather is usually in the morning to give information of the rest of the day.

I will be including a number of these jingles during my radio show.

Introduction to Jingles:

I'm going to create several jingles to keep give Jewce FM  a clear identity as well as to exaggerate the name of my radio station to penetrate my audience's mind into listening to Jewce FM as much as possible. I listened to a range of different jingles from different stations to get an understanding on how jingles are constructed. I have noticed through different jingles that the ways they are constructed with music, pace and tone gives an indication in who the audience are. Jingles often mention the show/ presenter but not always. I will be analysing different jingles to see which is most appropriate for my show.

Music on News Bulletins:

This post will help me with my radio station. The reason being is to see when the appropriate time to let the music play and when it is suitable for the music to fade in and out. Another reason why I will be doing this research is because I need to see what music is suitable for my radio station whilst the news bulletins.

BBC Radio 4

There was no music playing during the news. The reason being is because the news is taken more seriously on BBC Radio 4  as well the age range is higher and maturer.

BCB Radio

During the news on BCB radio there is a pumping tune in the background whilst the news is playing.

Capital FM

During the news there was music playing in the background whilst the news is on.

I have decided that during the news on my radio show I will have music before and after the news but I won't have the music playing during the news. The reason being is so the news has more of a serious effect older audiences can be fully immersed.

Representation (News Presenters):

In this post I will be listening to Capital FM and BBC Radio 4. I will be analysing how presenters talk when it comes to two completely different audiences. Capital FM is directed to a younger more family based audience whilst BBC Radio 4 is directed to an older audience. I will be listening out for the age, gender, language, tone of voice and interaction with out presenters. The reason I will be doing this is to help me write my radio script as well direct the actors in how to represent themselves according to my audience.

Capital FM:

The presenter for Capital FM is Marvin Humes who is a 29 year old male. Marvin spoke in a relaxed, informal and clear tone. He used slang words such as "lol" an abbreviation for laugh out loud when his co presenter made a joke.

BBC Radio 4

The presenter from BBC Radio 4 was a middle aged lady. She used formal words and used a powerful tone. The speed at which she as talking was slow, clear and calm.

Representations is a very important part on a radio station. BBC Radio 4 and Capital FM are two very different radio stations. They are aimed for completely different audiences. BBC Radio 4 is aimed at an older more sophisticated audience. Capital FM is aimed at a younger and family targeted audience. The fact that the lady in BBC Radio 4 is older and the news is presented in a more serious way show that representation is very important when targeting an audience.

Typical Conventions of Radio News Bulletins

In this post I will be writing about the typical conventions of a radio news bulletin apart from the presenter reading the story.

1: Correspondant:

A correspondent is a co-worker, in a different location speaking at the news story's live event.

2: Vox Pops

A member of the public giving their input on the story. It could be a few different people, with different point of views, and there might be an extended vox pop.

3: Sound Bites:
Sound Bites are important well know people (elite) or signifiant professionals giving their opinion but unlike vox pops they are not members of the public. E.g press conference.

4: Experts/ Guests:

They come into the studio and discussing a certain subject.

Khloe Kardashian

5: Outside Broadcasts

5: Archive Clip:

This is a clip which has been recorded in the past. Could be done when people die or extracts from previous interviews ect.

I listened to 3 different radio stations, news bulletins from completely different days and times.

1: I listened to a news bulletin at 8 PM on BBC Radio 4 and I heard a correspondent in the first story.

2: I listened to a news bulletin at 5 PM on Capital FM London and none of the above were included. Just to check I listened to another Capital FM news bulletin and none of the above were included.

3: I listened to a news bulletin at 6 PM on BCB Radio and I heard a

Overall Comparing National and Local Radio News Stories.

After listening to 2 local radio stations (Manchester and Oxford) and 3 national radio stations (talkSPORT, BBC Radio 2, Heart Radio.) I came to the conclusion that:

local news:
- contained stories which involved the people from each region which would unlikely be mentioned on national news unless it involves the news value 'amplitude.'
- mentioned a few national news stories.
-the most important news value was familiarity because the story would be mentioned if it involved the audience in each region.

national news:
-National news rarely had a local story.
-Concerned larger regions then local news.

Comparing National Radio - News: Stories

I listened to three national radio stations on the same day at the same time (10 PM).

1: talkSPORT
2: BBC Radio 2
3: Heart Radio

The purpose of this task is to compare and contrast the running order facts and 'news values' of each bulletin.

Heart Radio and BBC Radio 2 share three stories in common.

-Car transporter ship which was lying stranded in The Solent of the Isle of Wight.
- 13,000 + (Heart Radio) 16,000 people signed a petition against Oldham Athletic signing Ched Evans.
- Coastguards have suspended search for the crew of a cargo ship which sunk in the north east of Scotland.

talkSPORT share one story in common with Heart Radio and BBC Radio 2 which is:

-Coastguards have suspended search for the crew of a cargo ship which sunk in the north east of Scotland.

Surprisingly talkSPORT did not mention the Ched Evans news story. The reason could be because talkSPORT is a radio station which primarily speaks about sports so the news story would of been mentioned already.

BBC Radio and Heart Radio have the most news stories. I think the reason being is because the audience for each of the mentioned radio stations have an older audience.
