Comparing National and Local News - Evaluation:

Whilst reviewing 10 national and 10 local news stories I found both similarities and differences between the two types of news.

5 W's:

Whilst doing this research I found that in national and local news each article usually used the 5 W's near to the beginning of the story. I think this is done to grab the readers attention so they are interested and carry on reading.

For example I have annotated two articles from local and national news found on the BBC website.

National:

Local:

News Values:

I created a chart which shows a summary of how many times each news value came up in the 20 stories I analysed.

Most occurring news values in national news:
-Familiarity
-Amplitude
-Predictability
-Continuity
-Conflict
-Frequency
-Elite People
-Negativity

Most occurring news values in local news:
-Familiarity
-Surprise
-Conflict
-Negativity
-Predictability
-Frequency
-Amplitude

-In both national and local news the four main dominating news values are familiarity, amplitude, predictability, frequency.
-Familiarity although important in national news I think it is vital for local news stories to have this news value as the story is usually more of use to the people in the area.
- Amplitude is an important news value but is used in different ways for local and national news. In local news amplitude concerns different communities. In national news amplitude concerns many people in that country.
-I think frequency is more of use in local news because little things such as a robbery in a small area wouldn't be important on national news.
